Here is the progress so far. Painting tartan is actually relatively easy, especially if you're just making it up. I've gone for fairly high-contrast designs as you can see.
The hard part. The
really hard part is painting the lines on the heavily draped and folded pieces of cloth* that depend from the shoulder or are rucked up around the waist.
*Nomenclature fail.

Very striking colours.
You're probably not going to want to hear this but at this point, the upper hanging plaid is just the top 1/2 of the kilt or belted plaid, not a separate piece of cloth at all.

Thanks Ross, too. I suspected as much. The topmost parts of the folds tend to drag the paint off the brush leaving a thick stroke across the peak and a paltry trail in the trough.
Ross. PS - oh bugger. I see what you mean. Some re-painting seems to be in order.
